Seven systems, one recurring problem

Each of these was built for a market where the standard assumptions fail — connectivity is unreliable, there is no formal credit history, streets have no addresses, and there is no margin for downtime. What follows is what the system was for, what I actually built, and what it did.

    A personalised smart-farming companion giving smallholder farmers the decision support that commercial agriculture takes for granted.

    A commercial farmer in the Free State buys agronomy, satellite imagery and futures data. A smallholder in Mashonaland plants on the same guesswork their grandparents used, into a climate that no longer matches the calendar. Divisi closes that gap on the phone the farmer already owns.

    • Hyper-local crop advice, planting calendars and 7-day weather calibrated to each farmer’s exact GPS-pinned plot using GAEZ agro-ecological data — not district-level averages. The same engine powers the free crop-suitability check on the web, which ranks crops against a marked field with no signup.
    • Offline-first architecture: after a 60-second setup the core product works with no connectivity, syncing when signal returns. Shipped as Android and iOS apps — we started on a WhatsApp bot and pivoted off it, because the advice a farmer needs is a calendar and a plot, not a conversation. WhatsApp is now only a delivery channel, for one-time passwords and utility notifications.
    • A farm diary and ledger that turns activity and produce sales into a financial record credible to buyers and lenders — the first step toward formal credit for farmers with no collateral.
    • Farmer Hive: peer-to-peer answers from farmers growing the same crop in the same conditions, with expert verification. Alongside it, an open reference library — crop, pest and disease guides, a glossary of the words and measures farmers actually use and season and climate insights, all free and outside the app.
    • Built for smallholder farmers across Sub-Saharan Africa, with 500+ farmers on the product since launch in November 2025. Free to farmers, and it stays that way — the outgrower and contract-farming programmes that need the agronomic outcomes pay for it, not the farmers and not advertisers.

    Logistics

    An on-demand logistics platform connecting anyone who needs to move something with the nearest available vehicle — built from zero with two co-founders I met at a startup lab in Egypt.

    Third-party logistics in West Africa runs on phone calls, cash and trust. Pricing is improvised, drivers are unreachable when you need them and idle when you don’t. We built the operating layer that turned that into a marketplace.

    • Met Williams Fatayo and Foluso Ojo at the World Youth Forum Startup Lab in Egypt and co-founded truQ with them; I built and ran the entire technical stack as CTO.
    • Built the Django + PostGIS backend that matched shipments to the closest suitable vehicle, plus three Ionic Angular clients — business portal, driver app and consumer app — with RabbitMQ for async work and Paystack/Flutterwave payments.
    • Shipped the BI dashboards operations ran the business on, and stood up the platform that carried the company from launch to 70+ drivers and 300+ completed trips within its first ten months.
    • Recruited and mentored the first engineering cohort — four graduate trainees, now mid-to-senior engineers across African startups. I still mentor several of them.

    Senior Developer

    Maintained TinCan, the messaging and booking-state system behind every customer touchpoint for a tour operator moving 200,000+ travellers a year across 100+ destinations.

    When a traveller books a trip to Patagonia, everything between the click and the departure gate — confirmation, visa and passport requirements, pre-trip reminders, flight details, vouchers, post-trip evaluation — is a message that has to be right, personalised and on time. That was my system.

    • Maintained TinCan as its responsible engineer: a two-microservice Python architecture — Django for the template builder, delivery and inbound mail-event webhooks; Flask for the booking state machine — with RabbitMQ as the messaging substrate on AWS.
    • Sustained 10,000–30,000 emails a day across prospective, current and recent travellers, agents and white-label partners, composing downstream data sources into every send.
    • Led the systems integration for the National Geographic Expeditions partnership, wiring 106 trips across 59 destinations — a commercial workflow extended through 2035 — into TinCan.
    • Built self-serve template tooling that cut email turnaround for marketing and operations from days to minutes, and raised CI/CD, testing and monitoring standards on the platform team.
    • Ran the post-mortem on a schema-migration rollback incident and turned it into a team-wide rule: every schema change ships with a tested rollback path and a partner-readiness check before sunset.

    Utility metering

    Built the Android point-of-sale software and progressive web apps powering prepaid electricity, water and utility vending across a 600,000+ smart-meter footprint.

    For a low-income South African household, prepaid vending is not a feature — it is the difference between having power tonight and not. I worked at that front line, from the meter protocol on the wall to the payment on the phone.

    • Built and maintained the Android POS applications and PWAs running on retail-grade hardware, the vending front end for netVendor’s national base of 600,000+ meters.
    • Integrated smart meters and IoT devices at the protocol level — MODBUS, DLMS, SIGFOX — and connected them through to gateway payments with OZOW and Paygate.
    • Built and supported the prepaid electricity and water billing systems, and the PWAs households used to monitor their own consumption.
    • Changed the engineering culture: ran internal developer talks on clean-code practice, coached seven colleagues onto Git as the team standard, and mentored six graduate trainees who are now mid-to-senior developers.

    Architected the backend and cloud infrastructure that carried a financial-education platform through a critical growth phase — and conceived the product feature that became its engagement engine.

    • Designed and implemented the core Django + PostgreSQL API architecture and the cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines and containerised services underneath the mobile and web products.
    • Led ideation and end-to-end delivery of the FinMeUp Daily Quiz — a flagship engagement product that became central to the company’s daily-active-user metric.
    • Integrated payment processors and insurance APIs that unlocked new revenue lines, and built the BI dashboards leadership used to read the business each morning.

    • Implemented the distributed queuing systems behind blockchain operations — minting, transfers and notifications — across Ethereum, Polygon and GNOSIS.

    Tech Innovation Lead (Consulting)

    Led technology innovation and built the mobile field-data tooling behind a USAID-funded public-health survey in Namibia.

    Getting reliable data out of hard-to-reach populations is an engineering problem before it is a research problem. I built the tooling that made the fieldwork possible, then built the pipeline that turned raw GIS-tagged responses into evidence a ministry could act on.

    • Built a GeoDjango backend with PostGIS storage and a hybrid Ionic Angular field app, deployed in a USAID-funded Namibian public-health survey mapping the distribution and health practices of sex workers.
    • Built and ran the data cleaning and analysis pipelines that turned raw GIS-tagged field data into policy-grade insight for stakeholders.
    • CodeFarm is the company I founded to build software for African smallholder agriculture; it now builds and operates Divisi.

Earlier

Where the pattern started

Before any of the above, three university projects set the direction, and they are still the clearest statement of what I find interesting.

  • 2014

    Designed a digital scale that replaced a paper register

    As a second-year project I built a health-advising human interface device on a PIC18F4550 microcontroller, retrofitted into a modified digital scale and hooked to a computer over USB. University of Zimbabwe dining halls ran on paper registers at the time. A student stepped onto the scale and scanned the barcode on their ID; the system verified residency, admitted them, and then returned health advice based on their BMI, so the checkpoint people already had to pass through also nudged them toward healthier eating.

    After the presentation, the university’s Department of Accommodation and Catering Services adopted the access-control half and deployed it across campus. It taught me something I have leaned on since: a system gets adopted when it slots into a queue people are already standing in, and hardware you can actually source beats a better design you cannot.

  • 2017

    Computer vision for roads that were never designed for it

    A driver-behaviour monitoring and automated access-control system built for developing-country road conditions, named Undergraduate Innovator of the Year by the Research Council of Zimbabwe. The same vision pipeline was then put to commercial use counting and classifying traffic for Traffic Impact Assessments in Harare, including the Eastgate Market study. Off-the-shelf traffic models assume a vehicle mix that does not exist in Harare; measuring the real one turned out to be the whole problem.

    Credit scoring for people banks cannot see

    I led the team that won the Mobile Financial Services Hackathon with a credit-scoring engine for the informal sector built on mobile-money transaction data. A market trader has no payslip, no bank statement and no collateral, but does leave a dense, honest record of cash flow through their wallet. That record is the credit file — a line of thinking that runs directly into the farm ledger inside Divisi today.

If you are building for these markets, I have probably already hit the problem you are about to hit.

What gets me out of bed: offline-first products that still work when the network does not. Geospatial and field-data systems. Metering and payment rails that have to clear on the first attempt. And the question most people find tedious and I find genuinely interesting — whether a development-facing product is fundable before a line of it is written.
